A DRIVER in Co Antrim had a near miss this morning after trying to 'beat the barrier' at a railway crossing.

The car was pictured sitting sideways beyond the level crossing in Cullybackey, a few feet away from a speeding train.

Last year Translink warned drivers against "serious risk-taking" after releasing CCTV footage of two incidents, one showing a car sitting underneath a crossing barrier in Coleraine and a lorry that was on the wrong side of the barrier in Templepatrick.

Translink promoted a major advertising campaign last year using the slogans 'Don't try to beat the barrier' and 'Never use the tracks as a shortcut' in an attemp to discourage risk-taking.
