A 38-YEAR-OLD prisoner has died on remand in Maghaberry jail.

The Prison Service said the man died at the Co Antrim jail yesterday morning.

Police, the coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have launched investigations into the death, as is standard procedure.

The head of the Prison Service, Ronnie Armour said: "I would like to extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the man who has died in Maghaberry this morning".

"My thoughts are with them at this difficult time," he said.

Green Party MLA Clare Bailey extended her condolences to the man's family.

"There are too many deaths in our prison system. Six people lost their lives while in prison in 2016," she said.

"While the details surrounding the death of this man are just emerging, it is very clear that our prison service is under great pressure. This is having a significant impact on prisoners and prison office staff."
