A SECURITY alert in north Belfast was caused by a large firework, police have said.

The firework is understood to have exploded in or near a bin in the York Parade area shortly before 9.30pm on Saturday.

Police closed part of the Shore Road between Fortwilliam Park and Skegoneill Avenue during the alert before it was re-opened on Sunday morning.
