A SYMBOL commemorating Roger Casement has been left at a war memorial.

An Easter lily was placed at the base of a captured German gun in Ward Park, Bangor, Co Down.

The gun had been taken by British forces from the deck of a World War One-era U-boat.

Shortly before the Easter Rising, Casement was said to have been transported to Banna Strand by the U19 submarine from which the gun was taken.

He was captured on Good Friday, 1916 at Banna Strand attempting to land arms for the Rising.

As well as an Easter lily and a rose, a note was placed at the gun reading "in loving memory of Roger Casement" in English and Irish and "respect for all".
