A west Belfast boxing club has honoured one of its most famous sons through an art installation at its new training base.

Clonard Amateur Boxing Club has unveiled a 6m x 4m image of Michael Conlan as part of a state-of-the-art facility at the old NIE substation at Gortfin Street.

The 'Picture Perf' artwork features a picture on Conlan in his amateur days, translated onto metal by perforating different size holes into a metal sheet.

The 25-year-old, who won his first professional bout on St Patrick's Day against Tim Ibarra in New York's Madison Square Garden, is clearly pleased with the final result and posted online that he was honoured by the acknowledgement.

"This is class. My old amateur club using this on their new gym window. What an honour!!" he wrote.

Clonard ABC official Patrick Graham said they were delighted to recognise the impact Conlan had in amateur boxing and excited to welcome Michael home following his impressive professional debut.

The boxer turned pro after an amateur career which saw him win world and European championship gold medals and an Olympic bronze in 2012.

Conard received £260,000 through Sport NI’s lottery-funded boxing investment programme and Belfast council’s local investment fund for the under-construction premises, which include new training space and changing rooms.
