Martin McGuinness's last tweet was a poignant one. Sent while in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry the former deputy first minister posted it on March 1st 2017, just a day before Northern Ireland went to the polls. It read:
This election is about equality and respect for all our people and integrity in the institutions. Vote SF for the politics of hope not fear.

Mr McGuinness is believed to have been admitted to hospital in late February. He resigned as deputy first minister in protest over the DUP's handling of the RHI scandal in January. He quickly retired from electoral politics citing ill health.
I deeply appreciate the thousands of messages of support & good wishes that I & my family have received since yesterday. #ManyThanks
