A GAA club has raised more than £40,000 in support of a young brother and sister who were knocked down after stepping off a school bus in Co Antrim.

Mary O'Neill (11) and her brother Fintan (14) were hit by a car on Staffordstown Road near Randalstown while crossing to their home on Greenan Road on January 17.

Fintan has been discharged and is recovering at home but Mary remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Members of the club have been meeting each week since the accident to pray the rosary for the O'Neill family.

Kickhams Creggan GAC held the fundraiser in support of the family, the accident and emergency department at Antrim Area Hospital and the intensive care unit in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

More than £40,000 was raised at the 'big breakfast' event and raffle which took place at the club On Sunday morning.

The impressive fundraising total was praised by people including Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney, who knows the O'Neill family.

"A massive success. Over £40K raised!!! Brilliant organisation," he tweeted.

The brother and sister attend St Patrick's College in Maghera, Co Derry.

Mary is thought to have suffered head injuries, while Fintan is understood to have injuries including a broken leg.
