A man was critically ill in hospital on Friday night after a fire at a flat in Armagh city.

The fire in Culdee Street broke out shortly before 4.30pm.

Firefighters put out the blaze in the living room and rescued the man.

He was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital for treatment but was due to be transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast on Friday night.

A Southern Trust spokeswoman said the man was in a "critical but stable" condition before his transfer.

A spokesman from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said its officers and police were investigating the cause of the blaze.
