SAFETY concerns had been raised over the contentious Magherafelt flagpole, which was dismantled again last night.

Those who put it up have so far not explained how they carried out the work in a flowerbed on a roundabout in the centre of the market town.

One contractor had last night raised doubts over the safety of the structure.

Although it is not known how the flagpole had been anchored to the ground, the construction expert said the only safe way to fix it securely would have bene to bolt it to a concrete base.

He said even if a quick-drying concrete mix was used, it would have required several days to set properly.

The operation to erect the pole was carried out in sub-zero temperatures which, according to the contractor, presents extra hazards.

“Set aside the reason for doing it, they have more than likely compromised the safety,” he said after the pole appeared in the town centre.

“Given the speed of the operation and adverse conditions, there must be a question mark over the safety of this thing.”
