WATERBOARDING and electrocution were used during the Troubles with the knowledge of then British Prime Minister Edward Heath, it has been reported.

Amnesty International has called on the British government to investigate the allegations, reported on Channel Four news on Wednesday night.

The broadcaster published what it said was a secret government memo showing that Mr Heath knew about the alleged torture.

Patrick Corrigan, from Amnesty International, said the allegations were "extremely grave".

"This matter could not be more serious and merits a full, independent investigation," he said.

“Over four decades after torture in Northern Ireland was first exposed by Amnesty International and others, the UK authorities have still never conducted a proper investigation into the abuse and no-one, not the people who carried out the abuse, nor the people who authorised it, has ever been held accountable before the law."
