SINN Féin members, including North Down election candidate Kieran Maxwell, have made complaints to police about offensive posts on Facebook.

Linda Dillon, who is standing for Sinn Féin in the Mid Ulster constituency, said Mr Maxwell and two party activists had lodged formal complaints "in relation to hate crimes over offensive posts on social media".

Facebook have also been contacted.

Ms Dillon said: "Sinn Féin is calling on all other political parties to reject these attacks on candidates and attempts to intimidate the democratic process".

A police spokesman said officers were aware of the social media page.

"Enquiries are ongoing," he said.
