POLICE are investigating allegations relating to a nursing home in Portadown which agreed to close after a series of critical inspection reports.

Glenview Nursing Home closed on Thursday following an unannounced inspection that day.

The Regulatory and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) carried out the inspection of the home.

The home's owner, Brendan Breen, had applied for voluntary cancellation of its registration, the BBC reported.

A series of inspections, dating back to September 2014, had raised concerns about the home's cleanliness and cleaning schedule.

One report found that it was not fit for purpose and said a majority of bedrooms were in poor repair, with stained beds and soiled carpets.

The home has around 20 residents, who will now come under the care of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.

The trust told the BBC it will work with the RQIA to transfer residents to other accommodation.

It is unclear what allegations have been made against the home. Police said they were being "jointly investigated" by its public protection branch and social workers from the southern trust.

It said the "safeguarding of any vulnerable victim is a priority for the PSNI".
