THE last religious principal to lead a west Belfast college that was once the largest of its kind in Europe has died.

Sr Rosaleen MacMahon (76) was head of St Louise's Comprehensive College on the Falls Road.

A member of the Daughters of Charity order, she was also a former missionary in Ethiopia and chaplain at Maghaberry Prison.

Nuns from the Daughters of Charity led St Louise's, which provides education to girls of all abilities, from its opening in 1958 until Sr Rosaleen retired in 2005.

Her portrait, and those of her predecessors, hang in the school's foyer.

Her funeral Mass will be held at 10.30am at St Gerard's Church on the Antrim Road on Monday.

She will be buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
