TWO primary school children who were knocked down in separate road collisions remained in a critical condition last night in hospital.

A five-year-old boy was struck by a car at Malcolmson Park in the village of Magheralin, Co Down on Thursday afternoon.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, a nine-year-old boy, believed to be a pupil at Straidbilly Primary School, was hit by a car in Co Antrim.

The collision happened on the Toberdoney Road, Liscolman at around 4pm.

A spokeswoman from the Belfast health trust confirmed last night that both children were in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.

Meanwhile, a man in his 70s was taken to hospital after a one-vehicle road crash in Co Tyrone yesterday morning.

The collision happened on the Plumbridge Road in Newtownstewart shortly before 10.25am.

Police described the man's injuries as serious.
