SEVERAL tourist attractions were forced to close amid gale force winds.

Castle Ward and Rowallane in Co Down and Springhill in Co Derry were both shut by the National Trust, while the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge outside Ballycastle in Co Antrim was also closed.

Eager Game of Thrones tourists also battled the elements as monster waves battered the north coast at Ballintoy, where the hit television series has been filmed.

All ferry sailings between Ballycastle and Rathlin Island were cancelled due to high winds yesterday and there was some disruption to flights as well as delays on the Derry to Belfast train line.

Fallen trees caused road closures in several areas, including Killyleagh, Killinchy and Downpatrick in Co Down, as well as the Aghareany Road in Co Tyrone.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning with gusts of up to 60mph and snow expected for Thursday.. Sleet and snow showers have been predicted on high ground with winds continuing.

Forecasters said there could be up to five centimetres of snow on ground above 100 metres and more in some places above 250 metres. They have also not ruled out the possibility of 'thundersnow', where rain associated with a thunderstorm falls as snow.

Conditions are expected to be less windy on Friday, with some sunshine at times, but further snow showers.
