A CO Down GAA club and school have appealed for prayers for a father and daughter injured in a serious road crash.

Damian and Jennifer Sherry from Rostrevor were involved in a three-vehicle collision in Ballymoney, Co Antrim on Monday.

Ms Sherry, a GAA footballer for St Bronagh's club, was travelling with her father to Coleraine where she studies at Ulster University when the crash happened.

It is understood she was due to sit an exam that day.

Ms Sherry, who is understood to have previously battled cancer, was last night being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast where her condition was described as "stable".

It is understood her father is being treated at the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, but his condition was unknown last night.

Another man and a woman were also injured in the collision, which happened on the Ballymena Road close to the Kilraughts roundabout at around 7.45am.

There has been outpouring of support for the Sherry family, who are well-known in the Rostrevor area.

Both Ms Sherry and her sister Danielle play for St Bronagh's and the club appealed for people to remember the family in their prayers following the crash.

In a statement, it said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with ladies footballer Jennifer Sherry and her father Damian who are both currently in hospital following an accident yesterday.

"We also extend our thoughts to Danielle and Ann during this difficult time."

Ms Sherry had previously studied at Our Lady's Grammar School, Newry, which also asked people to think about the Sherry family.

"Please pray for our past pupil Jennifer Sherry and her Dad who were involved in a serious road traffic accident yesterday," it said.

"Our thoughts are with you and all your family."

Independent councillor Jarlath Tinnelly said: "Jennifer is such a popular, beautiful young girl who has already gone through so much and for this to happen is devastating.

"The Sherry family are well-known in Rostrevor and beyond and the whole community is behind them and wishing Jennifer and Damian well. Our thoughts are also with Danielle and Ann at this difficult time."

Gillian Fitzpatrick, chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down district council, also said "we need to keep the Sherry family in our thoughts and prayers".

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old boy last night remained in a critical condition in hospital after he was hit by a car near Bushmills.

The schoolboy was struck by the vehicle on the Toberdoney Road, in Liscolman on Tuesday at around 4pm. It is thought he is a pupil at Straidbilly PS.

He was taken to the Causeway Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where his condition is critical.

Police said a man in his seventies who was arrested has been released on bail. Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
