POLICE were called to six crashes within an hour on a single road in Co Antrim yesterday amid warnings over icy weather conditions.

The crashes happened on the Lisnevenagh Road near Ballymena with the first reported to police at just before 9.20am on Monday.

Two people were taken to hospital after sustaining minor injuries in a two-vehicle collision along the road between Ballymena and Antrim.

A further five single-vehicle crashes were reported to police within the same 55-minute period, although there were no reports of any injuries.

In the same hour another three single-vehicle crashes were reported nearby in the Ballymena area – on the Cushendall Road, Frosses Road and Larne Road.

Part of the A26 was also closed because of a collision between the turnoff for Kells and Antrim.

Overall 15 crashes were reported to police yesterday morning in the Ballymena area between 6.50am and just after 10.30am.

Police described the icy conditions as "treacherous" and motorists were advised to keep their distance and slow down.

PSNI officers in Ballymena released several photos of the crashes on their Facebook page.

"Drivers please be extra careful on the roads – they are treacherous," they wrote online.

"The road service are aware and will be out trying to make the roads safer for us all."

Warning of the risk of ice, the PSNI Antrim page on Facebook said: "Keep plenty of distance between you and the vehicle travelling in front. Anticipate a greater stopping distance. Travel at a reduced speed. Drive responsibly."
