Man (25) questioned about assault on PUP councillor and memorial attack

PUP councillor Dr John Kyle

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was being questioned by police on Sunday night about an assault on a PUP councillor and an attack on a memorial to loyalist David Ervine.

The man was arrested on Sunday.

PUP councillor John Kyle was kicked off his bicycle after he tried to stop four youths from defacing a memorial to Mr Ervine in on Montrose Street, close to Albertbridge Road in east Belfast, on November 13.

Dr Kyle said one of the men was defecating on a memorial seat while another man was filming him.

Police appealed to anyone who saw the attack on Dr Kyle or the attempt to deface the memorial to contact them.

Mr Ervine, a former member of the UVF, died in 2007 at the age of 53.

He was jailed in the mid-1970s after being found with explosives.

Several years after his release in 1980, he became a politician and helped bring about the 1994 loyalist ceasefire.
