THE GAA community will come together in Co Down on Saturday for the funeral of Ulster Council secretary Danny Murphy.

Thousands of mourners are expected to pay tribute as Requiem Mass is celebrated at noon in St Mary's Church, Burren, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Guards of honour will stand outside Mr Murphy's home as his remains are removed at 11am, including members of his Burren club, Down GAA and Ulster Council officials, staff, stewards and gate men.

They will walk alongside the cortege as it travels the two miles to St Mary's Church.

The guards of honour will also stand outside following the funeral Mass.

Parking will be available at Carroll Primary School and Burren GAA club.

Shuttle buses will operate between the club and church before and after the funeral.

Screens will also be set up outside the church to allow mourners to watch the Mass.

Mr Murphy died at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry on Wednesday at the age of 67.

A highly respected figure in the GAA and wider sporting community, the Burren clubman served as head of the provincial council for 16 years and was the only person to have held the roles of Ulster Council secretary and president at the same time.

His first involvement with Ulster Council was in 1981 when he was appointed as Down county board's delegate and in the intervening 35 years he held every post, serving as treasurer, vice-president and president.

A former playing member with St Mary's, Burren, he also hurled for both Rostrevor and Warrenpoint before becoming a county selector in the early 1990s.
