A WOMAN remains in a critical condition in hospital after suffering "serious injuries" at a house in Co Down.

A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident at Thomas Russell Park in Downpatrick on Friday afternoon.

It is understood the woman had been living at the property with her young child for a several years after moving to Downpatrick.

Police said she "received serious injuries" during an incident at the house.

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said she was "deeply saddened" at the reports.

"Such a traumatic incident is totally alien to this quiet neighbourhood in the centre of Downpatrick," she said.

"Families have resided in this estate for several generations in a harmonious way without any form of impediment or trouble.

"I have spoken to some local residents who are deeply shocked and offer their sympathy and support and wish her a very speedy recovery as well as community solidarity."
