A 33-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court accused of having heroin following a police investigation into a suspected drugs incident at a homeless hostel in Belfast.

Alexander Daley was charged by officers also examining the circumstances surrounding the death of a 27-year-old man in the city on Sunday.

He is not accused of any offences related to the death.

Daley, whose address was given as Centenary House in Belfast, is charged with possessing a Class A drug last Friday.

He faces another count of having heroin with intent to supply over a separate incident in May.

Police opposed his application for bail at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Monday, citing his use of the drug.

But a defence lawyer insisted Daley was not found in possession of any substances.

He said: "The suspected heroin amounted to a staining on a spoon and a staining on a needle."

District Judge Fiona Bagnall was told Daley is a registered user of the drug who is on the waiting list for a substitute treatment programme.

She granted bail for the accused to live with a girlfriend in Co Down. He is due back in court again next month.

Meanwhile police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the man's death are continuing.

According to a PSNI statement he died two days after the incident at the Salvation Army premises on Victoria Street.

Three men were arrested on Friday afternoon and released later on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detectives also carried out several searches of the premises over the weekend, seizing a number of items for further examination.

A Salvation Army spokesman said the organisation was "deeply saddened" by the man's death and was working closely with police.
