Man arrested after staff threatened with knife and hammer during Derry robbery

A MAN has been arrested following an armed robbery where staff in a shop were threatened with a knife and a hammer in Derry.

The masked man entered the shop in Westland Street at around 1.45am on Saturday and demanded money from the till while brandishing a knife and a hammer.

He then made off with a sum of cash.

A 28-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

He is due to appear before Derry Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact officers on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said: “ I would like to thank the local community for their help and assistance in our investigation to date.

"I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident who has not yet spoken with police or anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation to contact detectives at Reactive and Organised Crime in Strand Road on 101 quoting reference number 115 of 19/11/16. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
