POLICE are at the scene of a security alert in the Bogside area of Derry.

The alert was raised shortly after 10pm and a cordon has been put in place at the corner of Cable Street and Westland Street.

It's understood that residents from Cable Street have been asked to leave their homes.

Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly has slammed those responsible for leaving a suspect device in the Bogside area this evening.The device was found  on the road at the junction of Cable Street and Westland Street.Councillor Kelly said: “Whoever  left this device has only succeeded in causing hardship to the local population."It’s very upsetting for many of the elderly residents and those with young families caught up with all this disruption."He continued: "It is obvious that the those behind leaving such devices are out of touch with the will of the vast majority of the people of Derry who want to move forward without this type of disruption."
