A MAN has fallen to his death from a bridge over the M2 in greater Belfast.

It is understood the man fell from a bridge at Longlands in Newtownabbey at around 11.30am yesterday.

The motorway was closed city-bound at Sandyknowes for several hours following the crash. The southbound on-slip at Templepatrick was also later closed along with the northbound off-slip at Sandyknowes.

Police said the road had to be closed to allow the man's remains to be removed and to enable officers to gather evidence.

The closure caused long tailbacks across the city for several hours, including during evening rush-hour last night. Motorists were asked to avoid the area due to long delays.

Drivers were also warned not to use the hard shoulder, or reverse on it, because the route needed to be kept clear.

The road re-opened at around 6pm.
