THE average brick in a Belfast house is worth £22 - less than half the UK average.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) has calculated the cost of a UK brick at £47.44 when the house’s market value is considered – more than 50 times the price of a brick in a DIY store.

The most valuable bricks were unsurprisingly in London, at an average of £121, while Belfast was among the cheapest areas at £22.09.

The study, carried out for Barclays Mortgages, shows that the average cost across the UK has risen by a third over the last decade.

That is set to rise, Cebr predicts, by a further fifth by 2020.

“It is particularly interesting to see the regions and cities outside of London which are experiencing significant growth in house prices,” Raheel Ahmed, head of Barclays Mortgages, said.

Cebr's research used house price data from the Office for National Statistics as well as calculating the average number of bricks found in a property within each of the areas analysed.

TV property expert Sarah Beeny said: “Of course, there are no guarantees on which way house prices will go in the future, it is very much led by planning law and supply and demand, but this research should go some way in boosting the confidence of home owners around the country.”
