BBC's Children in Need appeal is to keep Terry Wogan's "legacy alive" with a fundraising award in his name.

The 'Sir Terry Wogan Fundraiser of the Year Award' will honour the contribution of the veteran broadcaster who passed away in January from cancer aged 77.

It will recognise one special individual or group of individuals who have shown "creativity, fun, determination and inspired others whilst raising money for the charity".

Wogan, who had the biggest radio audience in Britain for many years, hosted the Children in Need TV appeal throughout its 35-year history until last year when he was forced to pull out due to ill health.

"Sir Terry was immensely proud of the charity's fundraisers who, since 1980, have helped raise over £840 million for disadvantaged children and young people," the BBC said.

"The charity is now calling on the public to nominate either themselves or someone they know who’s deserving of the annual accolade."

Stevie Spring, chair of BBC Children in Need, said: "I can see no better way of keeping Sir Terry’s legacy alive.

"He was very proud of our amazing fundraisers and all that they did to help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK, no matter how big or small.

"He inspired, entertained and galvanised our supporters and we know that, through this award, that sentiment will live on."

The winner or group of winners will receive their award live on the Children in Need show on November 18.

Entry forms can be found at bbc.co.uk/Pudsey or at Post Office branches and nominations close on October 19.
