A 38-YEAR-OLD man has died in an industrial accident in Co Down.

It is understood the man was working for a contractor installing electricity poles on Church Street in Warrenpoint when the accident happened shortly after 2am. The man was taken to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry but was later pronounced dead.

A digger is thought to have been involved in the accident.

It is believed the man was from the Republic.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has begun an investigation.

A spokesman said: "Our sympathies and thoughts are with the bereaved family at this very difficult time."

SDLP assembly member Sinéad Bradley said the death was "deeply shocking".

"My thoughts and prayers turn immediately to the young man’s family and loved ones during this difficult time," she said.

"People in town have expressed to me how they are shocked and saddened by the news of this fatality."

Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane said the sudden death had caused "shock and sadness in the local community".

"The Health and Safety Executive are investigating the circumstances of his death," she said.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of this young man at this sad and difficult time."
