Country radio king Trevor Campbell - known to listeners as Big T - has been inducted into Ireland's Radio Hall of Fame.

The Downtown Radio DJ, who has been on the north's airwaves for more than 40 years, was given the honour at the PPI Radio Awards alongside broadcasters Ian Dempsey, of Today FM and RTE's Dave Fanning.

He was selected by industry representatives to "celebrate his art and skill in radio production over his years of broadcasting".

"During my 40 years on Downtown Radio I have been lucky enough to work with some of the biggest starts in the industry - from Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson to Kenny Rogers," he said.

"It's been a wonderful rollercoaster ride and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my love for country music with the listeners. It is a great honour to receive such a significant award - and I look forward to many more years `keeping it country'."

Managing director of Downtown Radio, Mark Mahaffy, praised the popular DJ, adding: "The word legend can be used flippantly in radio circles, but where Big T is involved, it is a description that is bang on the money."
