A MAJOR oil spill affecting motorway traffic has led to police warning drivers not to discard lit cigarettes on the road.

The spillage hit the M1 citybound and M2 foreshore on Sunday, stretching from the Applegreen service station on the M1 as far as the Mallusk offslip on the M2.

It also affected the A8 towards Ballynure and Larne.

The speed limit was reduced to 10mph and the road was closed between the Shanes Hill and Millbrook roundabouts.

Police have urged motorists to reduce their speed and "exercise caution" following reports of the oil spill.

They wrote on Twitter: "Due to major oil spill police have imposed a 10mph speed limit on A8 between Belfast and Larne. Motorists should not discard lit cigarettes."
