FIRE crews battled a blaze at a building in Belfast city centre amid high winds yesterday.

The fire broke out at the three storey building, close to a petrol station, shortly before 6pm. Smoke was seen billowing across the city.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said five fire engines and an aerial appliance attended the scene.

A spokesman said: "Despite challenging operational conditions caused by this evening's high winds fire crews have successfully prevented fire from spreading to adjacent properties".

Part of Great Victoria Street was closed for several hours on Sunday.
