A 40-YEAR-OLD man who was shot in both ankles in Derry may have been a victim of mistaken identity.

Dissident republicans are being blamed for the attack in Culdaff Gardens in the city’s Creggan area shortly after 10pm on Monday.

It is believed four masked men were involved.

The victim was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A woman who lives in the area said she heard gunshots and then a car leaving the scene at speed.

"When I looked out the window I saw the fella coming crawling, on his hands and knees, crying out for help," she told the BBC.

While no motive for the attack has been established, local people believe the man was not the intended target.

Sinn Féin councillor Colly Kelly called on anyone with information to give it to the PSNI.

“There can be no place for these types of incidents in our society,” he said.

Derry independent councillor Sean Carr also said no purpose could be served by such attacks.

“We have been witness to such shootings many times in the past and it must be clear to everyone that they never resolve disputes or problems."
