POLICE investigating the murder of leading loyalist John 'Bonzer' Boreland have returned to the scene of the shooting to appeal for information.

The 46-year-old former UDA 'brigadier' was shot twice in the head with a shotgun as he got out of his car in the Sunningdale Gardens area of Ballysillan at around 9.50pm on Sunday.

Rival members of the UDA are thought to have been responsible for the murder.

Boreland, a close associate of Andre Shoukri, was expelled from the mainstream UDA in 2006 and since then had sided with dissident loyalists who conspired to overthrow the organisation's leadership in north Belfast.

A 42-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder was released unconditionally on Tuesday.

A number of senior UDA figures have been asked to provide alibis for their movements on Sunday.

Boreland was thought to have been under surveillance while he socialised in a bar in the Oldpark Road area before he was followed back to his Ballysillan flat and shot dead.

A father-of-three, he had been targeted in a gun attack two years previously.

Police reissued a public appeal asking for anyone who was in Sunningdale Gardens between 9.30 and 10pm on Sunday August 7 to contact them.

They also asked for anyone who may have seen any suspicious vehicles or witnessed anyone acting suspiciously to contact detectives.

It is thought up to six people may have been involved in the planning of the murder, including the gunman who is thought to be a loyalist 'hitman' who recently served a jail term for drugs offences.

Mr Boreland's remains have been returned to his family but his funeral details have not yet been made public.
