IRISH TV presenter Laura Whitmore is take part in the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 31-year-ol, from Co Wicklow, will join singer Will Young and former Labour shadow chancellor Ed Balls on the dance floor.

The presenter has previously worked for MTV Europe and RTÉ and also fronted 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here Now!' for four years until 2015.

Her participation was announced on BBC Radio 1, where Ms Whitmore said she had wanted to be on Strictly since it first began 14 years ago and was "obsessed" with the show.

After studying journalism at Dublin City University - with a period abroad at Boston University - and working in Newstalk in Dublin, she got her big break in when she beat thousands of challengers to win the 'Pick Me MTV' competition in 2008.

Since then she has hosted live from several major events including the London 2012 Olympics, the Brit Awards and the Baftas.

The latest series of the hit BBC show begins next month and will feature Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman returning as hosts.

Ms Whitmore told the Strictly Come Dancing website: "I never went to dance school but I love dancing. Anyone who has ever met me knows this.

"I just love the endorphins it releases and it ties in to my love of music. I am a bit of a silly dancer so I’m looking forward to a bit of discipline."

She added: "I’ve embarrassed myself so much over the years I’m not sure there is anything left I can do. I fell off my chair on I’m a Celeb on live TV."

The presenter will take the name of Lady Macbeth for the show, with all contestants adopting Shakespeare characters for this year's competition.

Just three names have so far been confirmed, with Ms Whitmore saying she just wants "someone who can lift me" as her dance partner.
