A police officer needed stitches to his wrist and forearm after rescuing a 103-year-old woman who had fallen in her home.

The PSNI in Craigavon said concerns were raised on Sunday afternoon by the lady's carer who rang police to say she was not answering the door and she could not hear movement inside.

One of the first on the scene was a junior officer who despite not having 'method of entry' training or equipment to break down the door, took immediate action and broke the glass.

A colleague said: "He could hear faint groaning coming from inside so knew something wasn't right. In an absence of things lying around, and with an almost fully glass door, it was either cut his leg or cut his arm. He chose arm."

The elderly woman, described by officers as a "remarkably resilient lady", had fallen hours earlier but was given a clean bill of health by paramedics after treatment.

The junior officer was left needing several stitches to a couple of wounds.

"This is a timely reminder to look after your friends, relatives and neighbours. Look out for each other," police said.
