A TREE-lined avenue in north Antrim made famous by Game of Thrones is set to receive new traffic management measures to cater for a surge in tourists.

Holidaymakers have flocked to the Dark Hedges on Bregagh Road after they featured as a backdrop in the hit TV fantasy drama.

It has led to fears that the trees, among the most photographed natural landmarks in Ireland, could be at risk from the increased traffic and footfall.

Transport NI is now in discussions with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council about introducing a new traffic management system in the area.

Sinn Féin infrastructure minister Chris Hazzard said in response to an assembly question that a number of measures were being considered.

They include improved parking facilities for cars and coaches, pedestrian provision and even banning vehicles from the road.

"The discussions are aimed at providing a package of measures that will improve the experience for visitors to this increasingly popular tourist attraction," he said.

"It is hoped, with positive input from Transport NI, a package of measures can be agreed and delivered that will improve the overall experience for local people in the area and visitors to the Dark Hedges."
