A CYCLIST aged in his sixties has died yesterday following a crash on the main road between Belfast and Bangor.

The man was cycling towards Bangor with another cyclist when he was involved in a collision with a white Mazda car shortly before 6.30am on Tuesday.

The other cyclist, a man aged in his thirties, sustained minor injuries in the crash at Holywood on the A2 dual carriageway.

PSNI Inspector David Cleland appealed for anyone who was travelling on the A2 and who witnessed the crash to contact police or the collision investigation unit on 101.

DUP North Down MLA Gordon Dunne said he was "shocked and saddened" by the death.

"This is a very busy section of road and with upwards of 40,000 vehicle movements per day on this road it is one of the busiest roads in Northern Ireland," he said.

"It is devastating that yet another life has been lost on this road, sadly we have seen a number of fatalities on this road in recent years.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's family and friends at this tragic time.

"This serves as another reminder of the very real dangers along this busy road and I believe we must see investment along this route to improve road safety."

The A2 was closed in both directions for several hours but reopened on Tuesday afternoon.

During the road closure, access to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum was only from the Belfast direction, with no access from the Bangor direction.
