POSTERS warning against excessive drinking on the Twelfth are to be put on Metro buses in Belfast.

The posters, which include the slogan 'It's about the battle, not the bottle', were unveiled on Tuesday by Orange Order County Grand Master George Chittick and Belfast Lord Mayor Brian Kingston.

Several billboards have also been put up across Belfast.

The annual Twelfth demonstrations to mark the Battle of the Boyne are to take place next Tuesday.

However, the marches have often been linked to excessive drinking and littering on city centre streets.

Last month, the County Grand Orange Lodge of Belfast launched a project to encourage responsible drinking.

Mr Chittick said yesterday the Orange Order wanted to encourage marchers and spectators to behave responsibly.

"Advertising on public transport is the latest component of the ongoing campaign to highlight our message regarding the responsible consumption of alcohol on the Twelfth," he said.

"At the Twelfth of July we celebrate victory at the Boyne. It's not about getting drunk.

"With this year marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, I would once again appeal for all those participating in or spectating at our demonstration to act in a manner befitting of the occasion."
