A WOMAN has been taken to hospital after suffering serious head injuries in an incident in Newry this morning.

Police have closed the Tandragee Road in both directions as officers investigate a suspected serious assault at a house on Hollyridge Lane. 

Detective Colin Patterson said that a woman in her 50s has been taken to hospital, where her condition is described as life-threatening.

"We are investigating the cause of her injuries and the circumstances surrounding this incident," he said.

It is believed the road may be closed for some time and motorists are being urged to seek alternative routes.
