A MAN has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with attempting to murder a police officer.

A device was found under a car in Glenrandel in Eglinton, Co Derry last June in what police described as a "clear attempt" to kill officers.

Sean McVeigh (35), of Victoria Street in Lurgan, is accused of attempted murder and possessing Semtex with intent to endanger life on June 18 last year.

He did not acknowledge the court and refused to stand during his appearance on Monday.

When asked if he understand the charges he sat in silence.

A police officer said she believed she could connect McVeigh, who was arrested in Portadown on Saturday, to the charges.

Defence solicitor Peter Corrigan said there was no DNA or fibre evidence connecting his client to the scene and CCTV being used in regards to a vehicle McVeigh was allegedly in did not connect him to the incident.

He asked for disclosure from the prosecution so a full bail application could be made.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that anything that could be disclosed should be and remanded McVeigh in custody to appear again on May 16.

As he was being led from the dock supporters in the public gallery applauded.
