A COUPLE and their young child escaped injury after a car was set alight outside their Co Down home.

The arson attack happened in the Summerhill Brae area of Banbridge at around 2.40am on Saturday.

A car in the driveway was set on fire and the blaze spread to the house.

The couple and their child were able to escape unharmed.

Police have not commented on a possible motive, in what was the latest in a series of arson attacks on homes in Banbridge in recent months.

Ulster Unionist councillor Ian Burns condemned the weekend attack.

"It is really worrying and the fact that the driveways are so small means there is no means of escape. These people need stopped before they kill somebody."

SDLP councillor Seamus Doyle also urged anyone with information to go to police.

Police asked anyone with information to contact 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800555111.

Detective Inspector Keith Gawley said: "We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who noticed any activity in this area in the hours prior to this incident. We can be contacted on 101."

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 26-year old man was being questioned on Sunday night by police investigating an arson attack in the Coolnasilla Park West area of west Belfast on Friday morning.
