A 14-YEAR-OLD footballer was cut on the neck during a mass fight following a match in north Belfast.

A group of around 20 teenagers who had no connection with the game are understood to have started the fight at Grove playing fields at around 8.30pm on Monday.

The brawl began in the car park of the playing fields and later spilled on to Jellicoe Avenue.

Police said one of those involved may have had a Stanley knife, while others were armed with sticks.

The group of teenagers ran off towards Alexander Park Avenue when police arrived. Officers are investigating if the fight was organised through social media.

The brawl happened after Newington under-15s beat East Belfast in a league match.

The injured 14-year-old was from Newington.

Inspector Roy Watton said: "The youth received a cut to the rear of his neck and it is not clear how this was caused."

One concerned parent, whose son was playing in the match, said it had been a frightening experience.

"It was scary for the kids and parents too," she said.

"Let's hope there is no repeat of anything like this."

Police said they are continuing to investigate the attack and appealed to anyone with information to contact detectives.
