ON the hunt for something to do over the May Day bank holiday weekend? There's no shortage of events and activities across the north.

  • The Lord Mayor's Big City Picnic will take place on the front lawns of City Hall tomorrow.

Mayor Arder Carson is hosting the free family event from 12pm to 5pm to celebrate his term as Belfast's first citizen.

Picnic tables and gingham sheets will be laid out for people to relax and enjoy the entertainment with face painting, soccer skills coaching and interactive fun among the activities.

There will also be popular superheroes and fairytale princesses making an appearance as well as street theatre performances in partnership with Festival of Fools.

Traders from St George’s Market will also be offering a selection of food and crafts.

Inside City Hall will see visitors taken back to Hollywood’s bygone era of Butch Cassidy, Rocky and Sunset Boulevard with these classics of the silver screen showing at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

  • The annual Belfast City Marathon takes places on Monday with thousands of runners, walkers and wheelchair participants taking part.

The 26.2 mile race begins at Belfast City Hall at 9am with participants hitting the streets of north, south, east and west Belfast for the gruelling run to the finish line at Ormeau Park.

The main marathon race, team relay and wheelchair race all start at City Hall at 9am.

The eight-mile long marathon walk - designed for hikers and ramblers - also begins at 9am, while the fun run starts at 9.20am from City Hall.

  • Merry May Day celebrations in Holywood.

The Co Down town will host the annual festival on Monday with an array of colourful street theatre performances around the town.

The award-winning Demon Barbers will return for one show only and there will be the ever-popular Maypole Dancing at 11am and 1pm.

More than 60 stalls will be set up throughout the town as well as a traditional Punch and Judy show outside Holywood library and there's also a bonnie baby and fancy dress competitions.

  • The City of Derry Jazz Festival is also taking place over the weekend offering music lovers a fantastic programme of live music.

Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council the festival features live music acts at more than 70 venues and features over 200 musical acts over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Among the many popular acts are Red Stripe Band, The Jive Aces and Jaydee Brass Band.

  • The 30km Causeway Coast Challenge Walk, which takes in stunning views and scenery, is being held on Sunday.

This spectacular walk commences at Portballintrae and follows the coastal cliff path along the famous Giant's Causeway to reach Port Bradden and back.

This event, run by local club Bannside Ramblers, attracts walkers from all over Ireland and further afield.
