SINN Féin has nominated a former republican prisoner and gay woman to be the next deputy mayor of Belfast.

The party said Mary Ellen Campbell, who represents the Castle ward in north Belfast, is set to be the first openly gay person to hold one of the city's top posts.

She said she would promote "inclusion" during her time in office.

Ms Campbell said: "This is another step forward for the rights of the LGBT community and for equality in Belfast.

"I look forward to representing all the citizens of Belfast in the role of Deputy Mayor regardless of creed, class, gender or ethnicity and discharging my duties in the most inclusive and equal basis possible."

Ms Campbell's party colleague Arder Carson will vacate the Lord Mayor's chair in the coming weeks.
