JERRY Buting, one of the most famous US lawyers since Johnny Cochrane, has visited Belfast to speak at a European Young Bar Association conference.

Mr Buting is one of the criminal defence lawyers who represented Steven Avery and featured in the Making A Murderer documentary series about his case.

He and colleague Dean Strang have achieved a global cult-like following through the hit Netflix show.

Wisconsin native Avery made headlines when he was released from jail in 2003 following 18 years' incarceration after being wrongly convicted for rape.

He stood to receive millions of dollars in compensation before being accused of the murder of another woman.

The show followed his trial and proved compulsive viewing for millions.

Mr Buting said he was delighted to be invited to the conference, hosted by the Northern Ireland Young Solicitors’ Association.

"It was my pleasure to speak to so many young, enthusiastic legal professionals from across Europe who are creating a bright future for the profession," he said.

"The Making a Murderer documentary captured the public imagination and has got many young people interested in the legal profession once more.”
