POLICE were called to Derry's Brandywell Stadium on Friday night after trouble flared ahead of Derry City's clash with Shamrock Rovers.

It is understood that there were skirmishes just before Derry's game with the Dublin club with a small number of fans throwing bottles and stones at commerical and residental properties on the Lecky Road.

One woman who witnessed the incident, but who did not want to be named said: "The Dublin fans chased young Derry City fans through the Brandywell."

It is believed that a number of Shamrock Rovers fans were refused entry to the stadium ahead of the League of Ireland clash.

The incident comes after violence flared between fans as Derry City took on Cork City last month.
