A SECOND man has been charged with the murder of civil servant Paul McCauley.

The 28-year-old, who was charged last night, is due to appear before Derry Magistrates' Court this morning.

The accused, who is from Derry, has also been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a friend of Mr McCauley and attempted grievous bodily harm to another friend.

Another man has been charged with withholding information about Mr McCauley’s murder. The 61-year-old, arrested in Kent on Wednesday, will appear at Derry Magistrates' Court on May 4.

A third man was arrested but later released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

A father-of-one, Mr McCauley died in June last year almost nine years after he was attacked in a sectarian assault while attending a barbecue with two friends on Chapel Road in the Waterside area of Derry. Mr McCauley suffered serious head injuries and remained in a vegetative state until his death. His two friends also suffered serious injuries.

Following Mr McCauley’s death, police re-arrested the only man charged in connection with the 2006 attack.

Piper John McClements (24) – formerly known as Daryl Proctor - from the Fountain area of the city was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was released in February last year after serving half his sentence.

McClements was subsequently charged with Mr McCauley’s murder and later released on bail.

Since Mr McCauley's death, police have arrested 17 people. Police said inquiries into the 2006 attack will continue.
