Shankill Road shops fined for illegal display and sale of cigarettes

TWO shopkeepers on the Shankill Road have been fined a total of £1200 after they were caught displaying and selling cigarettes to a person under 18.

Steven Harrison, trading as Battenburg Off Sales, received two fines of £300 each for his offences, which were detected by officials from Belfast City Council.

John Millar, trading as Millar’s Convenience Store, also was fined a total of £600 for his offences.

Both defendants were also ordered to pay £69 each in costs to the Council.

Displaying cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 is an offence under the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion (Display) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012. Selling cigarettes to someone under 18 is contrary to the Children and Young Persons (Sale of Tobacco etc) Regulation (Northern Ireland) 2008.
