TROUBLED ex-soccer star Paul Gascoigne has become embroiled in a sectarian row after he appeared to sing along with an offensive chant at an event in Scotland.

Footage of the Q&A session in Irvine on Friday shows the former England player appearing to join in while Rangers fans chanted 'f*** the Pope and the IRA' during a rendition of Simply the Best, a Tina Turner song popular among the club's supporters.

Gascoigne, who played for Rangers between 1995 and 1998, is seen smiling on stage as the song is played.

The 48-year-old previously caused controversy when he mimed playing a flute at an Old Firm game at Celtic Park in 1998.

He was later fined £20,000 by Rangers.

He said he also received a death threat from the IRA.

Members of the 1,000-strong audience reportedly sang the sectarian song The Billy Boys at last week's Q&A event.

They also chanted 'Gazza, give us The Sash'.

The former player has battled with alcoholism and drug addiction in recent years and has had several stints in rehab.
