MUSIC fans were left confused and annoyed after an announcement that US superstar Beyonce would be headlining a festival in Belfast this summer turned out to be fake.

Thousands of social networkers were sent into a frenzy on Friday when it was revealed on Facebook that the Crazy In Love singer would appear in Tennents Vital, which usually takes place at Boucher Road Playing Fields in the south of the city in August.

Attention immediately turned to securing tickets for the gig, which emerged just days after the former Destiny's Child singer revealed she was going on a world tour, which includes a stop at Croke Park in Dublin on July 9.

The site also announced details of a competition to win sets of VIP tickets to see Beyonce at the festival.

However, it soon became clear that the page was a fake and it was removed from Facebook.

A short time later, it was reported that American rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers would be headlining the event, although no official announcements have been made.

The band, whose hits include Californication and Under The Bridge, last visited Belfast in 2011 for the MTV Europe Music Awards.

It was claimed the gig would take place on Thursday August 25.

No-one from Tennents Vital was available on Friday to confirm the appearance of the Red Hot Chili Peppers or comment on the line-up for the festival, which draws thousands of revellers every year.

Previous artists who have performed at the event include Snow Patrol, The Script, The Foo Fighters and Calvin Harris.
