Police probe viable pipe bomb attack on Derry house

A child narrowly escaped injury when a viable pipe bomb was thrown into the backyard of their home in Derry.

Police said two adults and a child were in the house at Ebrington Street in the Waterside when the device was thrown shortly after midnight on Friday.

Army technical officers were called to the scene close to the city's Bond Street. Police evacuated a number of families from nearby houses and ATO carried out a controlled explosion on the device around 5.30am yesterday.

PSNI spokesman, Brian Reid said police were still trying to establish a motive for the attack. He said families were able to return to their homes later in the morning.

DUP councillor, Drew Thompson condemned the attack.
